Bringing a new standard to middle school design, Twenhofel is the first public LEED Silver K-12 school in the state of Kentucky. Through creative design of south- and north-facing windows, light baffles, and lighting on photocell sensors, the school is a sophisticated learning environment. It even features educational tools for students to learn about solar-produced electricity, geothermal heating, and recycled waste water technologies utilized in the building. An equipment mezzanine is creatively woven between the light monitors so that maintenance of the HVAC system can be performed unobtrusively, without disrupting classroom learning. Zoning of the school allows nighttime functions to be accessible without affecting academic areas. The daylit gymnasium, library, and cafeteria are dramatic, uplifting spaces – a huge improvement over the previous school that this facility replaced.
