As a brand new high school, it was critical that this facility be conceived with the future in mind. Having experienced major population growth in the district, Cooper High was designed so that the infrastructure would accomodate subsequently added classrooms. Within a few years of opening, our firm was engaged to design the expansion wings, to facilitate the projected enrollment. Cooper’s design theme is a two-story mall that connects academic wings on one side and shared-use facilities on the other. In this way, students can remain within the smaller-scaled academic wing for most of the day and then travel to the joint-activity functions through the mall. The commons, library, gym and theater are all accessible from this wide mall which can be locked off at nighttime to secure academic spaces. A detached field house and sports complex complement the main building. Geothermal heating and cooling feed heat pump units that are discreetly located on a separate mechanical equipment mezzanine which allows maintenance staff to service equipment without disruption of academic functions.
